Diagnostics

Summary

The National WNS Plan recognizes the need for accurate, comparable, diagnosis of WNS in bats and detection of the causative agent, Pseudogymnoascus destructans, in the environment to ensure effective disease management decisions by resource managers. The Diagnostic Working Group has developed an Action Plan to establish standards to ensure uniform sampling methods, accurate and comparable WNS tests between diagnostic laboratories; assess current laboratory capacity for processing WNS samples; and promote the timely reporting of diagnostic results to resource agencies responsible for management decisions. This Action Plan is meant to be an adaptive product that will be periodically reviewed and updated to incorporate advancements made in sampling methods and/or diagnostic techniques for rapid dissemination among field biologists and WNS diagnostic laboratories.
